Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue doesn’t have to be your new normal. Functional medicine goes beyond the surface to uncover the root causes, helping you rediscover your energy and reclaim your life.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a complex condition marked by severe fatigue that cannot be attributed to any single underlying medical issue. The fatigue often worsens with physical or mental activity and does not improve with rest.

Fatigue Symptoms?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is characterized by profound fatigue, sleep disturbances, pain, and a variety of other symptoms that are often exacerbated by physical exertion.

Along with fatigue, common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue 12 to 48 hours after exercise, lasting from days to weeks

  • Unrefreshing sleep

  • Difficulty with memory, learning new information, concentration, or decision-making

  • Dizziness or fainting when standing

  • Increased heart rate with activity

  • Fluctuating sweating patterns, from excessive sweating to none at all

  • Feelings of burnout

  • Mood swings or depression

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

  • Migraine headaches

Causes of Chronic Fatigue?

The causes of chronic fatigue are diverse and may include:

  • Chronic illnesses such as hypothyroidism, Lyme disease, adrenal fatigue, asthma, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, infections, and heart disease.

  • Dietary imbalances, poor gut health, and micronutrient deficiencies.

  • Lifestyle factors such as stress and physical activity levels.

  • Certain medications, which can cause fatigue as a side effect.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Chronic Fatigue

Mitochondria are present in every cell of the body, where they generate most of the body's energy.

However, research indicates that mitochondria play a much broader role in various bodily functions. When mitochondria are not functioning properly, it can lead to oxidative stress, the formation of free radicals, and inflammation. Interestingly, mitochondrial dysfunction shares many symptoms with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Functional Medicine Approach for Chronic Fatigue

There is no single test available to definitively diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome. Instead, patients typically undergo a range of medical tests to rule out other conditions that may have similar symptoms.

Conventional treatment for chronic fatigue often involves prescription medications to manage symptoms. Commonly prescribed drugs include pain relievers, sleep aids, and antidepressants, each of which may have potential side effects.

At Rayma Health, we take a functional medicine approach to chronic fatigue, focusing on identifying the root cause of each individual's symptoms. Once we determine the underlying factors contributing to a patient’s fatigue, we develop a personalized treatment plan to help them restore their health and enhance their quality of life.
